            Caracol Mayan Site

Caracol one of the largest Maya archaeological sites in Belize , located in the Cayo District, it's a must do.

"Caracol" is a modern name from Spanish: caracol, "snail, shell", but more generally meaning spiral or volute-shaped— apparently on account of the winding access road that leads to the site.

Situated high on the Vaca Plateau deep in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol is the most extensive Mayan site in Belize and was only re-discovered as recently as 1938.
